There times when I question whether my decision to go back to school was the right one and if my career moves (and lack of) were smart.
This isn’t because I’m struggling in my classes or I don’t like graduate school. On the contrary, I’m a straight A student. Nor is it an admittance that I’m not pleased with all the free time I have now that I’m only working part-time. In fact, I’m very happy to have so much time to devote to roller derby, school, my mom’s Web site and, let’s be honest, staying up late and sleeping in even later.
It’s mainly my bank account that makes me doubt my decisions. I can’t help but wonder whether I should have looked for a new job instead of going to college. I certainly didn’t have the extra money for college. But what’s done is done and now the stress of being a poor college student is not so much resting on my shoulders, as it is crushing them. Why is it opportunities come at the most inopportune moments?
It will be nice to get away from home this weekend, play some roller derby against the Glass City Rollers and forget about all the little things clouding my vision, blurring my focus and causing me to doubt myself.
I’ve been amazingly busy with graduate school and roller derby, but we had our third home game over the weekend versus The Warning Belles of Naptown Rollergirls. We lost, but we had a lot of fun and the ladies from their league came to our after party and hopefully had a good time as well.
We did a little reorganizing at MMDG and I’m now focusing solely on being a media officer for the league, along with Smash YoFac’in.
I really like this move because my background is in the media world and I’ve been missing it since I had to leave my job in May. So I’m very excited to be able to focus just on getting the league media coverage.

Once again, I’ve been ignoring my blogging duties! We’ve been really busy with derby and I’ve been busy with school and I just officially got a j-o-b. So stands to reason I haven’t had time to update. But if you want to see some cool pictures of Mid Michigan Derby Girls vs. G-Rap ATTACK you can go this Web site, ShutterMonkey.com.
Heartless Vanish Wheels - Firm 96A. Aren't they pretty?
The thing about roller derby wheels is they need to be firm enough to go fast, but have enough grip that you don’t wipe out when you take a corner at full speed.
Right now I have Radar Speedrays, but they’re not as firm as I’d like and make me feel sort of sluggish. My first wheels were very solid and had almost no give to them. I was always afraid to go as fast as I could.
I’m doing some research on wheel durometer and looking for a balance between grippy and fast. I’m thinking about getting on this Heartless brand while they’re on sale at Viaderby.com. They’re rather new to the roller derby skate scene, but they seem to be going the right direction.
The only thing stopping me from buying them is that they seem similar to the Omegas or Mojos, which a few girls on the league own and have said very good things about.
Decisions, decisions. Maybe I should keep shopping.
I'm a skater for the Mid Michigan Derby Girls. I'm a lover of skating fast, driving fast, loud music and dancing.
I'm also a vegetarian, a fan of yoga, science fiction, reading, writing, technology, politics and the news. I'm a little bit of a dork, but I blame my Star Trek-loving parents for that.
